What are Bong “Percs”?

While a basic water pipe is a fantastic piece all on its own, there are advanced components, like percolators, that can make using a bong even more enjoyable. A percolator (perc for short) is a filtration system that creates an airflow channel, so smoke passes through the water before making its way to the mouthpiece. Percs cool down and filters the smoke, creating a smooth hit.

Today’s Most Prominent Percolator Styles

When shopping for a bong, all of the different types of percolators can be intimidating. Many of the common percs are named after their shape:

Tree

Tree percolators utilize a series of thin slits that act as connection points between vertical tubes known as arms.

Diffused Downstem

It’s a downstem with a slit at its base, located against the water chamber. It may seem like a minor feature, but the slits serve a huge purpose. Most of today’s bongs use this perc.

Disc

Disc percolators utilize a glass disc with purposely-placed holes, which creates smooth bubbles. While they offer excellent filtration, discs are more difficult to clean.

Turbine

A turbine percolator contains several small, angled slits attached around a chamber. During a hit, it creates a unique whirlpool effect that’s visually pleasing and smoothly efficient.

Barrel

A barrel can be either upright or horizontal. These tube-like structures have numerous notches that diffuse the smoke.

Showerhead

A combination of a turbine and a barrel, it forces the smoke to go through extremely tiny holes of a barrel structure to produce tiny, filtered bubbles.

Honeycomb Percolator

Perhaps the trendiest style is the honeycomb, which again is similar to a disc perc, only it consists of a stack of thin discs that each have a lot of small holes.

Diffused Downstem

It’s a downstem with a slit at its base, located against the water chamber. It may seem like a minor feature, but the slits serve a huge purpose. Most of today’s bongs use this perc.
